The gamble to expand the Star Wars universe has successfully paid off for Director Gareth Edwards, leaving fans wanting for more.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story  marks the eighth live action film and fourth prequel in the Star Wars franchise. The film screened worldwide on Dec. 16, 2016 and gained over $150 million on opening day according to Box Office Mojo.

The entire narrative surprisingly revolved around a few simple lines from the original Star Wars scroll: “during the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s secret weapon, the Death Star, an armoured space station with power to destroy an entire planet.”

I personally am impressed with Edwards’ experiment with the Star Wars universe being that this was his first time directing a Star Wars “spin-off.” He previously directed the 2014 Godzilla, grossing $529 million worldwide against a $160 million budget.

The cinematic was filled with superb casting of international stars that felt like real people who happen to exist in its fantastical universe. Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso) continues the proud tradition of having a female as the main character with Donnie Yen (Chirrut Îmwe), Diego Luna (Cassian Andor), Alan Tudyk (K-2SO), Riz Ahmed (Bodhi Rook), and Jiang Wang (Bazw Malbus) by her side throughout the film.

The battles were breathtaking, with the space battle being my favorite. The ground assault on Scariff had a gritty dangerous feel of Steven Spielberg’s’ Saving Private Ryan. These scenes especially highlighted Edwards’ technique of making the movie have this old feel while incorporating new concepts.

Besides the fact that they did not incorporate the iconic Star Wars theme song in the beginning of the movie, this film brought justice to my beloved Star Wars universe and deserves a five star rating from me.
