On Thursday, April 20, Eisenhower hosted their 32nd Terry Englund Relay from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

13 schools came to attend the race this year. This year, Providence Catholic from New Lenox won first place for the first time, breaking Shepard’s four-year winning streak.

Overall, the Eisenhower track team got fifth place, improving on last year’s seventh place. Although John Duckhorn, head coach, believes that the team has improved drastically, there were no records broken due to the windy conditions.

The relay began from the coach himself, Terry Englund. He was a track coach at Eisenhower from 1983 to 1993. His achievement of taking his track team to IHSA State Championship for track and winning fourth place gave him the honor of having the race dedicated to him.

This year, the relays had two honorees, Donnatta Yates, former Principal of Eisenhower, and Del Wilson, a 300 meter low hurdler in 1987. Yates was as being a great leader and a strong advocate of the sports programs, while Wilson was recognized for being a member of Englund’s team who finished fourth at the IHSA Track Championships.

Duckhorn expects Josh English and Elihu Young, track varsity members, to place first and second in the 400-meter relay next year.

The Terry Englund Relays will be expected to return again at Eisenhower next year in  April.
