When you look better, you play better.

This years’ team, lead by seniors Antulio Esparza and Aaron Martinez, is off to a good-looking start thanks to a lot of new equipment and a lot of hard work.

Coach Ryan Gorney, math teacher, is coming into his second year of being head coach of the varsity baseball team and  is already trying to put plans into place for the future by helping his team look competition and be more competitive.

The team received a new outfield fence with a windscreen that blocks out the wind during games. They also acquired a mobile batting cage “which allows the boys to practice quickly” says Gorney. The boys could practice anywhere and it makes it easier.

The team received funding for their new equipment through the athletic budget and an unnamed former Cardinal baseball coach.

“The batting cage really benefits us, we get to come to games early and get in the extra swings other teams can’t,” says junior shortstop, Scott Gardner.

The teams started their season off with a record of 5-7. Gorney’s expectations for the team is to finish above 500, meaning more wins than loses, and to make it to playoffs.

“We have our ups and downs. The boys started off well, but the last two weeks weren’t so good,” says Gorney.  “Baseball is a long season and it’s tough to play consistently.”

The boys will compete next Thursday at Lemont High school at 4. p.m.
