50 posters created by students from Ms. Michelle Alfano’s  Spanish IV Heritage Classes were displayed at the Blue Island Public Library for 10 days in honor of Columbus Day.

Alfano has been teaching the conquest of Americas in her classes, comprised of primarily Latin-American students who have indigenous roots themselves.  The three-week long unit exposed the controversy of the American holiday and allowed students the opportunity to connect with the theme.

“This was a great experience because students were able to take their education and bring it to the community to raise awareness that Columbus day is very controversial,” says Alfano.

Mayor Domingo Vargas, mayor of Blue Island, stopped by the event to support the students at their Expo on Oct. 6.  He, along with various 218 administration including Principal Erik Briseno,  took the time to interact with the students and share his personal experience.  Vargas spent roughly an hour with the students where he invited them to tour City Hall on Dec. 1.

The posters have been saved and there is a plan to display them around Eisenhower High School at some point in the near future.
