The Eisenhower chess team embraces the season with a record this year that may hint a big win for them.

The team is currently third in conference with a record of 7-3, defeating Oaklawn and Reavis for the first time this year.

“This years team is really unique because the players work hard and challenge each other,” says coach John Wydra. “They play chess outside of our weekly practices and matches by using apps on their phones and iPads. Our players coach each other and analyze each other’s games after every match is played to see where good moves and mistakes were made.”

The students nearly defeated Richards earlier this season who won conference 16 years in a row.

Wydra is fortunate to have a regular group of at least 15-20 students who attend practices regularly. The students practice every Monday with matches held on Tuesday.

This year IHSA has added a Sectionals Tournament at the end of January. If the team does well there, Wydra we will be able to send the varsity team to the State Finals in Peoria in February.

“We have really strong players this year,” says Junior Eddie Munoz. “The team is really prepared when it comes to predicting the opponent’s next move.”

Munoz predicts this year that the team will advance to sectionals because of their dedication and hard work during practices.

The varsity chess team starts the new year with their first competition at Evergreen high school on Jan. 17
